Polymer Clay Mug Care Guide: How to Wash & Keep Hand-Sculpted Mugs Looking New

To clean a handmade polymer clay mug safely, wash it gently by hand using lukewarm water, mild dish soap, and a soft non-abrasive sponge, then pat it dry with a towel. Never place sculpted polymer clay mugs in a dishwasher or microwave, and never soak the clay artwork in hot water.

Every mug sculpted at Nozherha Hona is crafted from oven-cured polymer clay bonded to high-grade ceramic. Once cured, polymer clay is water-resistant and sturdy for everyday hot or cold drinks—provided you follow a few simple hand-care habits that protect fine 3D details like sculpted hair strands, glasses, flowers, and name plaques.

How Should You Wash a Polymer Clay Mug Step by Step?

  1. Rinse with lukewarm water: Let gentle running water rinse the inside of the ceramic mug first rather than submerging the entire mug in a full sink.
  2. Clean the interior normally: Use a soft sponge and regular dish liquid on the inner ceramic walls and drinking rim.
  3. Wipe the sculpted exterior lightly: Pass soapy suds softly over the polymer clay character or name with your fingertips or a soft cloth—never scrub with wire wool or stiff bristles.
  4. Rinse and air-dry upright: Rinse away soap residue immediately, blot excess moisture with a microfiber towel, and stand the mug upright on a drying rack.

Polymer Clay Care Do's and Don'ts

Situation Safe Practice (Do) What to Avoid (Don't)
Daily Washing Quick hand-wash with lukewarm water and mild dish soap Dishwasher cycles (steam, high heat, and harsh detergent tablets loosen adhesive over time)
Hot Beverages Pour freshly brewed coffee, tea, or hot chocolate directly into the mug Reheating the mug inside a microwave or conventional oven
Stubborn Tea Stains Soak only the inside by filling the mug with warm water and a pinch of baking soda Submerging the outside sculpted clay artwork underwater for hours
Dust on 3D Details Brush crevices gently with a clean, soft makeup brush under cool running water Scraping tiny details with fingernails, knives, or rough scouring pads

Can You Drink Hot Coffee or Tea from a Polymer Clay Mug?

Yes. Pouring boiling water, espresso, or hot tea inside the ceramic mug is completely safe for daily use. The ceramic body absorbs beverage heat normally while the cured polymer clay remains securely attached on the outside wall. Only direct microwave radiation or prolonged exterior soaking in scalding water should be avoided.
